For Students: Symposium 2006 - April 28 & 29
This Symposium is a showcase for your talents and accomplishments. We welcome your participation. Online Registration Your registration form must be submitted online by Friday, April 7, 2006 at midnight. Click - here - to register. Required materials include: your contact information, a 250-word (or less) abstract of your work, names and emails of co-authors (if any) and mentors, and a selection of how you are going to participate: with a poster, oral presentation, or both. What You Need to Do Click - here - for a complete check list of what you need to do for the Symposium. On Friday, April 28th, the East-West Center's Hawaii Imin International Conference Center will be open from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for your poster set-up and pre-loading of your PowerPoint presentations on the laptops (see map of rooms where oral presentations will be). If you are giving a presentation, this would be a good time to preview your room. Public viewing and judging of the posters will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
On Saturday, April 29th, the Symposium will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the East-West Center's Hawaii Imin International Conference Center. The event will include morning coffee and tea, lunch, special performance by the UH Dance Ensemble, and will conclude with the presentation of awards.
Printing a Poster Click - here - for instructions for printing a poster at FedEx Kinko's. The Symposium has money for defraying the cost of printing a poster. You must first pick up an authorization letter at the Honors Program Office (Sinclair Library room 504B). You cannot receive the subsidy without the letter, and you must present the letter to FedEx Kinko's when you place the order. Please do not use this option if you have access to a poster printer in your own department. Click - here - to read the guidelines for making a poster. Preparing a Talk Prepare a talk that is 7-10 minutes in length [there will be an additional 5 minutes at the end available for questions and answers.] Your audience will include people who are not experts in your field of endeavor, so please prepare a talk that will be enjoyed and understood by a broad audience. A PowerPoint projector and laptop will be provided in each presentation room. Please do not bring your own laptop. There will be no internet connections. Bring your PowerPoint presentation on a CD-ROM or DVD (generic format, e.g. ISO 9660) and on a flash memory stick that has a USB connector. (In general, we recommend bringing your presentation on two devices in case one does not work.) Plan to load your presentation onto the laptop either on Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning during the check-in time. Approximately one week before the Symposium we will publish the schedule of oral presentations. The schedule will show who is speaking in each room during each 15-minute period. It will also provide a link to each speaker's abstract, as well as a listing of room moderators. Awards Awards of gift certificates from the UH Mānoa bookstore will be made for best oral presentation in each panel of both sessions as well as for poster presentations in each of three categories: social sciences, arts and humanities, natural sciences/engineering. Criteria for the judging will be based on specific rubrics. Click - here - to see how the moderators will be judging the oral presentations. Click - here - to see how they will be judging posters. Honorable mentions will also be awarded in each oral presentation panel and each poster division. All students participating in the symposium are automatically eligible for these awards. |
